On Wednesday, Jan. 7, Austin Zoo head zookeeper Sara King will travel to Southeast Texas to pick up four wolf hybrids to bring back to the animal sanctuary in Southwest Austin, located at 10807 Rawhide Trail. Nearly 90 percent of the nonprofit zoo's 300 animals are rescued.

In the wake of Hurricane Ike, the owner abandoned his property and left the wolves in the care of his elderly parents. Authorities in the area eventually seized the animals and contacted the Humane Society in Beaumont.Photo of wolf hybrid

Unable to keep the animals, the Beaumont Human Society will turn over the wolves, which would otherwise be euthanized, to the Austin Zoo. They are expected to arrive at the Austin Zoo on Jan. 8.
