1house at a time is dedicated to financial empowerment for low-income families, community building and renewable energy education and advocacy. It creates pathways to self-sufficiency for struggling homeowners and informs the public about the benefits, both financial and environmental, of renewable energy, energy efficiency and conservation. Volunteers weatherize and improve the energy efficiency of homes by installing various products.

Agape Pregnancy Resource Center offers opportunities for families to prepare themselves physically, emotionally and spiritually for the birth of their child. Volunteers assist with the client intake registration process or in the Layette Center.

AIDS Services of Austin (ASA) responds to the HIV needs of the Austin area by providing services that enhance the health and well-being of individuals and the community in the face of an evolving epidemic.

Alzheimer’s Association - Capital of Texas Chapter seeks to eliminate Alzheimer’s disease through the advancement of research and to enhance care and support for individuals, their families and caregivers. Volunteer opportunities vary.

American Cancer Society hopes to reduce the cancer mortality rate and cancer incidents through early detection, prevention and advocacy. Volunteer opportunities include the Road to Recovery and Reach to Recovery programs, assisting at health fairs, fundraising, office duties and Relay for Life.

American Red Cross of Central Texas ensures disaster planning, preparedness, community disaster education, mitigation and response, as well as assisting military members and their families in times of crisis. Red Cross volunteers perform a variety of services including assisting in disaster relief, casework processing and staffing shelters.

Angel Food Ministries - Christians Helping Christians is a nonprofit, nondenominational organization dedicated to providing grocery relief and financial support to communities throughout the United States. Volunteers help with the distribution and unloading of goods.

Annie’s Way is an annual Thanksgiving program at St. William’s Church in Round Rock for homeless and needy families. Volunteers are needed to bring prepared food or cooked turkeys and help with serving and delivering meals to the homebound and homeless.

Annunciation Maternity Home offers new beginnings to teenagers and women experiencing crisis pregnancy. Volunteer opportunities include mentoring and life skills training for mothers, working at the daycare center, providing transportation, administrative support and helping at special events.

Any Baby Can provides education, therapy and family support to needy families. Volunteers offer homework help, literacy training and childcare.

Assistance League of Austin is an organization of volunteers dedicated to addressing specific needs through practical and innovative programs.

Austin Child Guidance Center works to improve the mental health of children through treatment and emotional skills training. Volunteers play with and evaluate children waiting for appointments.

Austin Children’s Shelter provides care and shelter to abused and neglected children. Volunteers help by offering supervision, tutoring and positive interaction or by working in the office or kitchen.

Autism Society of Greater Austin is an all-volunteer chapter of the Autism Society of America, whose mission is to improve the lives of all affected by autism. Volunteers are used in many different ways and to help with the Autism Awareness Bike Ride on Sunday, April 11, 2010.

Austin Dog Alliance is a rescue organization offering community education programs and pet therapy training. Volunteers participate in youth activities, event coordinating, administrative tasks, fostering dogs and marketing.

Austin Groups for the Elderly - Elderhaven Austin provides care for seniors with special needs. Volunteers help with entertainment, yard work, clerical duties and more.

Austin Humane Society is the city’s largest no-kill, nonprofit pet adoption center dedicated to saving Austin’s homeless cats and dogs and educating our community about responsible pet ownership and reducing pet overpopulation. Volunteers help with dog walking, the Cat Adoption Team, the foster care program and more.

Austin Museum of Art is dedicated to developing and educating a broad audience for the visual arts in Austin, focusing primarily on 20th-century and contemporary art. Volunteers help with visitor relations, education, exhibitions and the art school.

Austin Parks Foundation connects people to resources and partners to develop and improve parks.

Austin Partners in Education provides college and career readiness for AISD students. Volunteers provide tutoring and lead study groups for students.

Austin Pregnancy Resource Center helps women with unplanned pregnancies sort through and decide their options while giving accurate and factual information in a confidential and welcoming environment. It offers free tests, sonograms and classes. Volunteer opportunities are listed on the website.

Austin Public Library volunteers shelve books, perform clerical duties and read to children during Storytime Connection.

Austin Public Library Friends Foundation supports the Austin Public Library by increasing public awareness of the library and its importance to the community, and by raising funds to enhance library collections, programs and services. Volunteer opportunities include the Library Ambassador Program and assisting with special events, newsletter production and office correspondence.

Austin Recovery aims to bring about the in-depth changes that are essential for overcoming addiction. Volunteers help with admissions, childcare, clerical duties and life skills coaching, which can include topics such as job readiness, healthy relationships and parenting.

Austin State School - Volunteer Services Council is dedicated to enhance the quality of life for individuals with mental retardation. Volunteers befriend residents and assist with classes and special events.

Austin Time Exchange Network (ATEN) enables individuals to exchange services with one another by sharing skills within a network of people in Greater Austin. ATEN’s goal is to serve as a bridge between people from different economic, social and ethnic backgrounds by providing the opportunity for interaction through the exchanging of services.

Austin Yellow Bike Project (YBP) is a community-supported, all-volunteer, nonprofit organization dedicated to providing human-powered transportation for the people of Austin, running a community bike shop and educating children and adults.

Austin Zoo and Animal Sanctuary is a Hill Country zoo where the people of Austin can learn about the animals close up, spend some time outdoors getting exercise and have fun. Volunteers help out with office tasks, grounds keeping and some animal care, depending on experience.

Ballet Austin is a company wholly committed to bringing the art of dance to thousands, including those who might not otherwise have the opportunity. Volunteers help with special events, the front desk, education, ushering and will call in the box office.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Texas pairs volunteers with young people in need of mentoring and positive role models.

Bikes for Goodness Sake Foundation provides bike shop quality bikes to children in need.

Blue Santa brings some Christmas cheer to families that might not otherwise have gifts and food. The organization was started by the Austin Police Department in 1972 and includes the Texas National Guard, the Austin Fire Department, Austin Parks and Recreation, and Austin Energy.

Bluebonnet Trails MHMR provides services for mental health, mental retardation and substance abuse.

Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum needs volunteers to help the museum in a number of areas, all of which help tell the story of Texas. Volunteers work in administrative duties, education, visitor services, special events and work as docents.

Brown Santa is a community service organization of the Travis County Sheriff’s Office and the other organizations and volunteers that staff it. The goal is to provide assistance to families in need in the unincorporated areas of Travis County.

Camp Agape Bereavement Camp for Children is a summer camp program designed specifically for children who have suffered the loss of a loved one. The free, Christian-based service offers all the fun of a typical summer camp, along with group-therapy activities to assist the children with their bereavement process.

Cancer Connection, formerly CanCare Austin, is a growing network of cancer survivors and their family members offering hope and companionship for individuals and families affected by cancer. Volunteers visit cancer patients and their family members at hospitals and oncology centers. They provide refreshments, information and emotional support.

Capital Area Food Bank works to end hunger in the Austin area. Volunteers ensure donated food is suitable for distribution.

Capital IDEA is a partnership between Austin Interfaith and the Central Texas business community. The group’s goal is to connect dedicated, hard-working job-seekers with employment that will provide good salaries and benefits.

Caritas of Austin seeks to establish a continuum of services for impoverished people to link them with the tools they need to obtain self-sufficiency. Direct service volunteers work to provide life skills training to clients. Indirect service volunteers help with special events, clerical duties and food drives.

CASA of Travis County Inc. recruits, screens, trains and supervises volunteers to provide “guardian ad litem” representation for abused and neglected children to help them reach a safe and permanent home.

Catholic Charities of Central Texas volunteers work in a wide variety of programs that serve the needs of at-risk communities. Volunteers work in several capacities, including the food pantry and mentoring programs.

Cedar Park Public Library Foundation volunteers help repair and process books, prepare materials for the children’s program, help with special events and assist with other library needs. Volunteers must be 14 or older, and adults must pass a background check.

Celebration of Love works with area school districts and volunteers to give food and gifts to those in need. It also includes the Foreman-Phillips Reaching Out Center, which hosts a food pantry that is open every Friday from 2-5 p.m. Fresh Food for Families is the second Monday of every month from 2-4 p.m. and the Healthy Options Program for the Elderly occurs monthly on the third Thursday from 2-4 p.m.

Center for Child Protection advocates for victims of abuse or witnesses to violent crimes. Volunteers help with direct care for children and perform support tasks.

Central Texas SPCA is a no-kill shelter that provides care for homeless animals. Volunteers assist with direct animal care, fundraisers and adoption.

Central Texas Trail Tamers is a group of ready volunteers that donates labor to lessen the burdens of government for projects that enhance public use and protection of environmentally sensitive parks and preserves.

Charity Craft Volunteer Network and its volunteers create handmade quilts, toys and other items for those in need.

Children at Heart Ministries provides specialized services and resources for ministries that care for children and families, including STARRY and Texas Baptist Children’s Home in Round Rock.

College Forward provides college access and college persistence services to motivated, economically disadvantaged students in order to facilitate their transition to college. Volunteer roles are adapted to fit individual knowledge, skills and preferences.

Dell Children’s Medical Center of Central Texas is the only dedicated pediatric hospital in Central Texas. Volunteers provide assistance to patients, families and staff and take part in fundraising and community outreach.

Down Syndrome Association of Central Texas provides education, support and resources to individuals with Down syndrome, their families, professionals and the community, while building public awareness and acceptance of the abilities of individuals with Down syndrome.

Easter Seals Central Texas, originally chartered as the Texas Society for Crippled Children, has been providing services to children and adults with disabilities and their caregivers since 1937. Volunteers help with special events, clerical duties, camp and the gala committee.

El Buen Samaritano Episcopal Mission has fulfilled a unique role in Austin as a provider of integrated health care, emergency food, advocacy, leadership, development and basic education for working-poor Hispanic families since 1987.

EMANCIPE+ is dedicated to preventing animal homelessness and putting an end to euthanasia as a means of population control by providing low-cost or free surgical sterilization of dogs and cats. Volunteers work as ambassadors in the clerical, appointment and clinic areas.

Fairy Godmother Foundation helps underprivileged high school girls attend their prom, homecoming or any special evening by giving them dresses, surrounding them with positive role models and encouraging future success. Open year round by appointment only.

Family Eldercare provides support services to older adults, adults with disabilities and their caregivers in Austin and the surrounding area. Volunteers provide support to those lacking the support of friends and family by assisting with bill paying and visiting regularly. Other volunteers facilitate telephone activities for the Lifetime Connections Without Walls program. Volunteers are always needed and are instrumental in enabling the programs to impact the lives of older adults in the community.

Family Link is a nonprofit organization devoted to linking children who need homes with foster and adoptive parents in the Central Texas region.

Financial Literacy Coalition Central Texas, in collaboration with Texas AgriLife Extension Service, provides affordable and/or free money management education and training to adults and youth in the Central Texas area. FLCCT recruits and trains volunteers to provide this education and training.

Foundation Communities is a nonprofit organization providing service-enriched, quality housing to families and individuals with low incomes. Volunteers are financial coaches who assist clients in creating concrete short-term and long-term financial goals and provide them with the support and knowledge to reach the established goals. People can also volunteer to work in the Community Tax Center by providing tax preparation services.

Foundation for the Homeless Inc. mobilizes the resources of the community of faith to alleviate homelessness in the spirit of compassion, hope and love.

Friends of the Cedar Park Public Library is a nonprofit, supportive group of volunteers established in September 1980 to promote the library within the community. Its purpose is to support and strengthen the library’s resources and services to the public.

Friends of the Georgetown Library runs the Second Hand Prose used bookstore in the Georgetown Library. All funds from the bookstore go toward improvement of the library, such as children’s activities and special programs, as well as toward unfunded projects.

Friends of the Hutto Library helps fund library programs. Volunteers do fundraising and support the library in various ways.

Friends of the Pflugerville Community Library provides funds to enhance library programs, publicize specific library activities, support legislation to strengthen libraries and promote literacy and life-long learning.

Friends of the Round Rock Library is a volunteer, nonprofit corporation whose main purpose is to support the library with funds and materials. The organization donates books and related library materials to the library and holds an ongoing book sale to raise funds for the library.

Friends of the Taylor Public Library plays a vital role in summer activities at the library. Each year the group solicits sponsorships from local businesses to pay for performers and entertainers for the Summer Reading Program.

Georgetown Animal Shelter provides care for homeless animals. Volunteers assist with direct animal care and adoption.

Georgetown Medical Assist Team is a nonprofit first-responder organization that is registered with the Texas Department of State Health Services. Join us at a monthly meeting held at the Georgetown Fire Department Station No. 4 (4200 Airport Road) at 7:30 p.m. on the first Thursday each month.

Georgetown Partners in Education organizes community resources to benefit students and enrich the educational experience. Volunteers offer mentorship and tutoring to students.

Georgetown Project coordinates community resources to build a healthier environment for children and youth. Volunteers assist in fundraising and youth programs. Bridges to Growth, a program under the Georgetown Project that offers a free lending library, uses volunteers to assist with clerical duties and children’s events.

Girlstart volunteers work to encourage girls to pursue interests in math, science and technology through after-school programs and mentorship.

Goodwill Industries of Central Texas employs people with disabilities. Volunteers work in retail locations performing stocking and customer service duties.

Habitat for Humanity of Williamson County teams build quality houses for impoverished families. Volunteers assist in construction and clerical tasks.

Hands on Central Texas, a program of United Way Capital Area, strengthens communities though meaningful volunteer action. The organization provides more than 400 volunteer opportunities and projects including Days of Service and Volunteer Leadership.

Health Sense Home Care provides care in the comfort of the client’s home.

Heart House Austin - Trails at the Park is a free after-school program dedicated to providing a safe haven and academic support to low-income children and encouraging them to become good citizens. Volunteers work with children, serve on a committee or assist the Heart House staff.

Helping Hand Home for Children provides therapeutic foster care for abused and neglected children. Volunteers read to children or help with homework.

Hill Country Community Ministries is a nonprofit corporation that provides food, clothing and financial assistance for people in crisis or poverty in southwest Williamson and northwest Travis counties.

Hospice Austin provides compassionate, end-of-life care for patients and their families. Volunteers assist staff in caring for patients. There will be a volunteer training session Feb. 16-27, 2010.

Humane Society of Williamson County is a not-for-profit organization founded in 1979. Its missions are to provide innovative programs and services to eliminate pet overpopulation and to improve the lives of pets and people in Williamson County. The minimum volunteer age is 8 years old.

Just Because Christmas Project is a nonprofit program that was established in 1992 in association with St. William’s Parish of Round Rock. The purpose of this project is to serve underprivileged families that live outside the city limits of Round Rock or that do not get help from other agencies. Volunteers are needed the Friday and Saturday before Christmas to help sort goods, wrap presents and distribute items to families in need at the annual Just Because Christmas Project.

Keep Austin Beautiful works to beautify and enhance the living environment of the community. Volunteers work on service projects, including creek and road cleanups.

Knowbility is a nonprofit organization supporting the independence of people with disabilities by promoting the use and improving the availability of accessible information technology. Volunteers help with special events.

Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center was founded by Lady Bird Johnson and Helen Hayes in 1982 to protect and preserve North America’s native plants and natural landscapes. The Wildflower Center offers volunteer opportunities in the garden, festivals, educational programs and the gift store.

Leander Community Club seeks volunteers to assist in organizing free events designed to bring the community together.

LifeSteps works to eliminate substance abuse in Williamson County through prevention, intervention, counseling, education and family services. Volunteers help with clerical duties.

LifeWorks helps individuals, youth and families by providing support, safety, shelter and counseling for individual and family success. Volunteers are needed for Project Holiday Help and more.

LifeWorks - Literacy Program provides instruction for basic literacy and English as a Second Language (ESL) to adults, ages 17 and older, who read below the fifth-grade level.

Lighthouse Hospice volunteers may provide end-of-life companionship for patients and their families or perform administrative tasks.

Literacy Council of Williamson County improves adult literacy in the county. Volunteers tutor adults and help them earn their GED.

LIVESTRONG: Lance Armstrong Foundation was founded in 1997 by cancer survivor and champion cyclist Lance Armstrong. LIVESTRONG provides practical information and tools people with cancer need to live life on their own terms and unites people to fight cancer. LIVESTRONG offers both volunteer and internship opportunities.

Lone Star Circle of Care provides primary health care for uninsured patients in Central Texas. Volunteers help with administrative tasks and act as patient advocates.

Make a Wish Foundation of Central and South Texas grants the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions. Volunteers assist in wish granting, fundraising and event planning.

Miracle League at Town & Country is a league for special needs children that allows them to play baseball. Volunteers work in concessions, help the children play, provide coaching and more.

SafePlace seeks to end sexual and domestic violence through safety, healing and prevention for individuals, families and the community. They accompany survivors to court, plan children’s birthday parties, deliver toys to SafePlace for clients for the Holiday Giving Program and more.

Samaritan Health Ministries provides low-cost healthcare services to the uninsured. Volunteers support medical professionals by doing administrative duties or serving as translators.
