GEORGETOWN — Councilman Mike Martinez congratulated mayoral candidate Lee Leffingwell when Leffingwell arrived at their joint election returns party at Hills Café on South Congress. About a hundred supporters are in attendance and a band is playing. Leffingwell is hopeful that he might win the mayoral race without a runoff.
"I'm very happy with the results so far," Leffingwell said. Early voting results showed Leffingwell with 13,248, Brewster McCracken at 7,688 and Carole Keeton Strayhorn 5,988. Martinez, who has been on city council since May 2006, appears ready to secure another term on the council. He faced opposition from Jose Quintero, who did not actively campaign.
Martinez said his support for Leffingwell is personal not just political. "We're dear friends, and we will be well beyond city council," Martinez said. In early voting, Martinez pulled 21,419 of the votes, with Quintero taking 3,774.
